Who determines what’s cool in your school? The teachers? The parents? No, it’s the popular kids who determine the cultural social trends. Instead of trying to change this reality, let’s utilize the power of the popular student to shift the social dynamic of the school from the inside out. Not all popular kids are mean, some are compassionate, natural born leaders. Let’s harness their influence for the greater good of everyone.

Think of it this way, we all know that most bystanders don’t stand up for the underdog because they are afraid the popular kids will turn on them. Imagine if it was the popular kids themselves who were encouraging the bystanders to stand up. Over a semester you’d witness profound changes in your school because anything that gets the stamp of cool approval is likely to be adopted into the student’s daily subculture. They will follow the trend of the important members of the cool crowd.

Everyone at school will want to be cool – following the cool crowd and becoming leaders without even knowing it. They will carry it into their lives far beyond graduation day.

The Hero of the Week Program is a powerful tool because it motivates followers to follow the “right thing.”
